AI-Assisted ECRIF-Based Listening Instruction is a practice-oriented module designed to develop participants’ pedagogical and technological competencies in planning, delivering, and evaluating listening lessons within contemporary English language teaching contexts. The course introduces the ECRIF framework—Encounter, Clarify, Remember, Internalise, and Fluently use—as a systematic model for structuring listening instruction and guiding learners’ cognitive engagement with input. Through this framework, participants examine the nature of listening as an active, multi-layered cognitive process and learn to design instruction that supports learners from initial exposure to fluent communicative use.
The module places special emphasis on the principled integration of generative artificial intelligence and text-to-speech systems. Participants explore how AI tools can be used to create and adapt listening transcripts, generate audio at different proficiency levels, and produce tasks that support prediction, clarification, retrieval, interpretation, and fluency. While technological affordances are highlighted, the course prioritizes pedagogical decision-making by reinforcing the teacher’s role as the critical evaluator and ethical gatekeeper of AI-generated content.
Throughout the course, participants analyse sample materials, identify issues such as inaccuracy, bias, and genre mismatch in AI outputs, and revise flawed lesson designs to ensure appropriacy, safety, and alignment with learning objectives. They also develop full ECRIF-based listening lessons that incorporate AI strategically and responsibly.
By the end of the module, participants will be able to:
This module prepares future and current English language teachers to navigate AI-supported instructional environments with confidence, critical awareness, and professional responsibility.
